Breast Augmentation - Implants
Breast augmentation enhances the contour of a woman who is unhappy with her breast size. It may also correct volume loss after pregnancy, improve breast symmetry, or reconstruct the breast after removal. Most women are familiar with breast implant surgery. For a patient’s point-of-view regarding breast augmentation, see www.implantinfo.com.
Breast implants may be placed directly under the breast tissue (subglandular), or it may be placed under the pectoral major muscle (submuscular). Submuscular placement is our preference. Placing the implants under the muscle makes recovery longer. However, the benefits of submuscular placement include better impalnt concealment, a more natural look and less risk of the breasts becoming firm, making a longer recovery worthwhile.
Implants can be saline filled or silicone gel. Placement occurs through one of three incisions; infra-mammary (in the crease under the breast), peri-areolar (next to the areola), and trans-axillary (through the arm-pit). Most women have slight differences in size or shape between their breasts. Minor asymmetries are often improved, however, with major asymmetries subtle differences may persist after surgery.
The operation lasts about an hour and is performed with the patient asleep. Patients are able to go home shortly after surgery. Initially your implants will be slightly high and your breasts firm. At two months implants have usually settled into their final position and your breasts feel soft and natural. Most patients are highly satisfied with their results.
